Orwell

Orwell is a closed-cycle producer: the tobacco grows in Ukraine rather than being bought in finished from abroad, and everything from there to the jar stays inside the company. The practical consequence is more interesting than the fact itself — the leaf goes through several stages of cleaning and washing, and the finished mix carries almost none of the “background” tobacco note that usually pushes through the flavouring. The taste comes out cleaner and the tobacco itself works as a more neutral base.

Flavourings are sourced from the USA, Europe and Ukraine — a bet on batch-to-batch consistency rather than on cost.

The most useful thing about Orwell is transparency. The lines are called Soft, Medium and Strong, and that is exactly what they are. In a market where strength has to be inferred from reviews or guessed from pack colour, simply reading it off the label saves both money and ruined sessions.

• Soft — the light level: for a long evening, for a group, for anyone still finding their threshold.
• Medium — the working middle and the most versatile choice for everyday sessions and for mixes.
• Strong — the strong level on a Burley and Virginia blend, for people deliberately going after nicotine.

Because the leaf is washed, it behaves calmly and asks for no special ritual: a loose untamped pack and three coals on a phunnel. On Soft, start with two — a light level gives its flavour up faster, and excess heat just shortens the session. With almost no background tobacco tone, Orwell works well as a base in a mix: it holds the structure without imposing its own character.

The main sizes are 50 and 100 g. The 50 g pack is useful precisely because of the three-level system: you can buy the same flavour in Soft and in Strong and honestly compare how much the level changes the experience, without buying two large jars.
