Darkside
Dark leaf and direct flavour instead of layered compositions. Three levels, each its own blend rather than simply more nicotine.
The flavour should read from the first draw
Darkside is built on the opposite principle to brands competing on layering. There are few compositions here that “open up gradually”, and plenty of clean, recognisable notes that land immediately. For mixing that makes the brand close to an ideal construction set: you know exactly what each component contributes, and you get no surprises twenty minutes in.
The base is unwashed Burley, meaning the leaf keeps its natural nicotine. Hence the reputation — even the middle line is noticeably heavier than any blonde-leaf brand.
Three lines, three different blends
What matters is that Darkside's lines differ not only in nicotine but in leaf composition:
- Base — deliberately light, on pure Burley with nothing added. The way into dark blends for someone who has only smoked Turkish tobacco so far.
- Core — the flagship and the working middle: a Burley and Virginia blend with the widest flavour palette. Most of the catalogue sits here.
- Rare — the top end: Burley with Virginia and Oriental varieties added, noticeably stronger.
The practical takeaway: the same flavour smokes very differently in Base and in Core. If Darkside once “didn't work” for you, it is worth checking which line that jar came from.
How to smoke it — start by mixing it
The most common mistake with Darkside happens before the bowl. The tobacco is heavily saturated with syrup, which sits unevenly in the jar, so the mix needs stirring thoroughly before packing. Skip it and one bowl comes out too wet and the next too dry, for reasons that will seem mysterious.
After that it is familiar: a loose pack, a phunnel, three coals as the working rule. Dark leaf dislikes excess heat — better to start at three and add than to fight off bitterness.
Formats
30, 100 and 250 g for Base and Core; Rare comes in 30 and 100 g. The 30 g pack is especially useful here: it lets you test a specific line without committing to a jar of tobacco whose strength you do not yet know.
